Claude’s Privacy Policy Update: Why It Matters

Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, one of the most popular alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok.
I don’t use it often, but whenever I do, I find it to be the most polite. It was designed with a strong focus on safety and ethical principles. One of my customers even told me Claude feels the most “female-friendly.”
That might sound small, but it’s important: how large language models generate text often reflects how their creators see the world. It’s reassuring to know that at least some teams prioritize ethics and safety.
However, recently, Anthropic quietly made a change to its privacy policy that sparked concern among users, economists, and AI influencers alike.
👉 By default, your conversations can now be used to train and improve their models (unless you go into settings and opt out).
👉 If you don’t opt out, your data may be retained for up to five years.
For a company that built its reputation on safety and user trust, this was… surprising. Understandable given the competitive pressure to keep pace with other AI players, maybe. But disappointing nonetheless.
Privacy has always been one of the top concerns when using any large language model (LLM). This shift signals how intense the race has become, and the risk of a “race to the bottom,” where companies compromise on principles to move faster.
You can, of course, opt out in your settings. But the fact that the default is opt-in means most people will unknowingly share their conversations. I was more disappointed by this fact than the update ih the policy itself, because it feels they benefit out of people's ignorance.
To me, this is a reminder: technology won’t stop. But how we build it, and whether it truly serves people, is still up to us.
Claude’s update also highlights a bigger point: picking an AI tool isn’t just about features. It’s also about values - data privacy, safety, and the user experience you want.
That’s why I created a free guide comparing the personalities and strengths of the four major AI chat tools: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok.
Because yes, each one has its own “character” - and they work differently in different situations. You'll need to choose what's best for you - don't just go with ChatGPT because that's what everyone is doing.
Our choices shape how AI develops. Stay aware, stay curious, and let’s keep pushing for AI that serves us, the humans.
